Holiday turned home Rafael Masters landed in Vietnam 14 years ago. A recent graduate, the British national had planned to travel the world and experience different cultures. To finance such a trip, he planned to work as an English teacher. “I intended to teach for a year and then return home. Scent of pomelo flowers fills streets of Hanoi

At this time of year, street vendors carrying pomelo flower baskets are often found on main streets around Hanoi such as Xa Dan, Pham Ngoc Thach, and Kim Ma. Pomelo flowers are also used to create flavours for some of Hanoi’s specialties. They are used to cook lotus seed sweet soup or to create an aroma for tea or dried Kuzdu powder, all of which are tasty dishes and drinks enjoyed by local people. After the buds start to bloom, the flowers are then cut and divided into smaller bunches. The prices of pomelo flowers in bunches range between VND200,000 and VND250,000 per kilogram. These flowers have cheaper prices, hovering around VND100,000 to VND150,000 per kilogram. The simple rustic white flowers have won the hearts of people in the capital thanks to their sweet and seductive fragrance.
